The Birmingham Transit Program comprises various projects that will enhance public transportation over the next decade, creating a high-capacity “world-class” transport system that will provide neighborhoods with access to educational and employment opportunities, and vital services.
The City of Birmingham engaged STRADA Professional Services, LLC to provide program management services including master planning, oversight, coordination, and quality of project activities and deliverables, to ensure program alignment to the City’s near- and long-term goals and objectives for public transit. It includes coordination with other agencies and stakeholders’ programs and initiatives, regulatory compliance, and optimizing resource utilization.
This Program is being paid for with a combination of federal transit grant funds and City of Birmingham Funds.
A TIGER grant, or Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, is a federal program designed to provide funding to improve access to reliable, safe, and affordable transportation while expanding economic development opportunities.
The FTA is the lead agency to ensure transit projects comprising the program meets all legal requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). They also have responsibility for monitoring and overseeing work on this TIGER funded project.
The City’s objective is to have an operating Transit System in place before the The World Games 2021 that can be leveraged to continue City transit to benefit the citizens and the economy.
